The Waggon and Horses Pub in Elstree was built in 1471 as a cottage at the side of Watling Street. The Cottage, seen to the right of the pub, was extended when it became an Ale House. Above is a present day photo of the current Public House which is located on the opposite side of the road.
Inside there is a large walk in fireplace, oak beams and a very traditional feel. The food is absolutely worth a visit for.
Although there is very little actual documented history, a number of stories have survived. One interesting story is that of a previous Landlord who was murdered at the bottom of the staircase. Another is connected to an infamous murder that occurred in Radlett and the body was hidden for a while in a well that no longer exists. Strange things have been experienced over the years including items known to be in one place, turning up weeks later in a totally different one. Voices have been heard and an old man has been seen sitting by the fireplace although there was actually no one there. Most Haunted have also investigated here a few years ago.
During our visit a number of photos were taken but not too much found on this occasion. ( mind you it was lunchtime )
