The old church known as Little St. Mary's is actually in Thundridge but as it is situated in Cold Christmas Lane between both places and is often referred to as Cold Christmas Church. It is three miles north of Ware and the River Rib can be seen from the tower.
The earliest record of a Chapel on this site goes back to 1086 where it was part of the estate belonging to Hugh De Desmaisnil. It was demolished in 1853 when the new Parish Church was built in Thundridge. The 15th Century Tower was left intact along with the graveyard. There have been many rumours of the Church being built on a North / South alignment instead of east / west.
The tower has three stagings and some of the original fixtures from the chapel have been incorporated into it as the 14th century window above he door and the 12th century doorway. Now it is derelict, boarded up with copius amounts of graffiti and vandalism marking the area.
Due to the unusual location of this tower there has been much interest in it over the years from different parties that have led to a number of stories and accounts of strange happenings. The latest in January 2009 led to a local newspaper sending an investigative reporter to see for themselves after some strange video footage of something inside the tower, the reporters recorded growling and beat a hasty retreat.
There are local stories of Witchcraft, Satanism and it is rumoured to be haunted. In 1978 a woman walking towards the tower was confronted by a whole army coming out of the tower door and marching through her. A figure in black has also been spotted on occasions around the graveyard. Mists and orbs are often caught at this site.
All of the reports claim an uneasy atmosphere and most people are unsettled. There are reports of an evil presence inside of the tower probably helped by the appearance of signs and symbols inside.
We will be joining with the Bedfordshire team to do a more detailed investigation of this area as it is on an ancient site, possibly coinciding with the Ermine Way and in an area where evidence of settlements have been found dating back as far as 5000 - 10,000 years ago. The photos have been provided by Mark from the Bedfordshire Team.
